What's it like to be an Instrumentation Technician?
Instrumentation Technicians are qualified electricians who specialise in working with equipment instrumentation and control systems. They install and maintain equipment and repair faults to reduce interruptions in a production environment.
Tasks and duties
- Inspecting and testing machines, gauges, equipment, instrumentation and control systems to diagnose faults.
- Adjusting, repairing and replacing worn or defective components and wiring.
- Installing, calibrating, testing and repairing electrical instruments and control systems.
- Performing scheduled and preventative maintenance on plant equipment.
- Advising others on the proper use of instrumentation and control systems.
- Minimising downtime and disruptions to operations.
- Ensuring work complies with safety and quality standards.
How to become an Instrumentation Technician
You need to be a licensed electrician to work as an Instrumentation Technician. This usually involves completing an apprenticeship. Some employers prefer candidates with dual trade qualifications (electrical and instrumentation). Additional licences and tickets may be required to perform certain job activities.
- 1.Become a qualified electrician by completing a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30820). This is completed as part of an apprenticeship and takes around four years, including a mix of theoretical learning and on-the-job training.
- 2.Apply for your Electrician’s Licence via your state’s licensing body.
- 3.Consider completing a Certificate IV in Instrumentation and Control (UEE42220) to improve your employability. This requires you to be either a licensed electrician or enrolled in an electrical apprenticeship.
- 4.Get your construction induction card (white card) and other necessary licences or tickets by completing short courses with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
