What's it like to be a Jeweller?
Jewellers design, create and repair jewellery using a wide range of materials and tools. They may create rings, brooches, bracelets, necklaces or other small objects out of precious metals, stones, plastics or wood.
Tasks and duties
- Designing and determining specifications for jewellery before shaping, moulding, cutting, filing, soldering, screwing and filing different materials for the object.
- Repairing, replacing, rebuilding or restyling worn and broken parts of jewellery.
- Appraising the quality and value of items and communicating this to customers.
How to become a Jeweller
To become a trade qualified Jeweller, you usually need to complete an apprenticeship (a combination of on-the-job training and a classroom-based course). This qualification will teach you about jewellery repair, stone and gem setting, technical drawing and metal casting and will give you the skills and knowledge you need to work as a Jeweller.
- 1.Explore relevant qualifications, such as a Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture (MEM30605) and investigate which courses run in conjunction with a jewellery apprenticeship. The length of the apprenticeship depends on which state you live in, but they are usually 3 - 5 year contracts.
- 2.There are many pathways and specialisations for Jewellers, such as becoming a gemstone setter, enameller, stone setter, diamond grader, ring maker or opal polisher.
