What's it like to be a Screenprinter?
Screenprinters operate tools and equipment to push a variety of inks through a stencil, creating designs, signs, logos and advertisements on posters, canvas, clothing and merchandise. In addition to preparing designs, mixing inks and correctly operating printing and drying machines, Screenprinters also need to ensure that the equipment and tools are thoroughly cleaned in between jobs. Screenprinters are required to have both creative and technical skills.
Tasks and duties
- Talking to customers to determine their needs.
- Making recommendations to obtain the desired outcome.
- Setting up and adjusting machines for print quality.
- Maintaining, repairing and storing tools and production equipment.
- Troubleshooting production issues, from designs through to machinery failure.
- Checking ink viscosity, colour, saturation and depth.
- Managing the workflow.
- Maintaining a safe working environment.
How to become a Screenprinter
While there are no formal educational requirements to become a Screenprinter, a printing or graphic arts qualification may be an advantage.
- 1.Learn on-the-job from an experienced Screenprinter in an informal traineeship environment, gaining knowledge and experience as you work.
- 2.Consider completing a Certificate III in Printing and Graphic Arts - Screenprinting (ICP20115) through a TAFE or registered training organisation.
- 3.Alternatively, consider a Certificate III in Print Manufacturing (ICP31315), which is a more generalist course.
