What's it like to be a Joiner?
Joiners are specialist carpenters who work on a variety of woodwork projects ranging from building furniture and cabinetry through to interior fittings such as windows, doorframes and staircases.
Tasks and duties
- Interpreting architectural drawings and planning materials to be used.
- Cutting and constructing materials.
- Erecting structures.
- Repairing existing fittings.
- Consulting with project managers and clients.
How to become a Joiner
Most Joiners hold a trade qualification, often completed as part of an apprenticeship. Entry requirements can vary, but completion of Year 10 is generally required.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Joinery (CPC31920) or Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) as part of an apprenticeship. This usually takes between three and four years to complete.
- 2.A White Card is required to work on construction sites in Australia. This can be obtained by completing construction induction training through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). You will need to provide the trainer with 100 points of ID and pay the fee (set independently by each RTO).
- 3.Apply for a Certificate of Completion. This nationally recognised accreditation shows that you have completed your training and are ready to start working in the carpentry industry.
