What's it like to be a Roofer?
Roofers are responsible for covering houses and buildings with insulation and sturdy waterproof surfaces to ensure they are weatherproof. Roofers may be employed by companies that supply and repair roofs, be self-employed or work for manufacturing companies. Due to the nature of the work, Roofers must be physically fit and comfortable working outdoors and at heights.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting accurate site measures before erecting scaffolding and cutting and installing roof materials such as insulation, waterproof underlays, sheet metal and protective paint.
- Attaching plumbing and guttering.
- Identifying any roof defects and carrying out maintenance as required.
How to become a Roofer
To work as a Roofer, you’ll generally need to have completed an apprenticeship or traineeship.
- 1.Undertake a qualification in roofing, such as the Certificate III in Roof Tiling (CPC30820). You may complete a qualification as part of an apprenticeship.
- 2.You’ll also need to ensure that you undergo safety induction training and get a Construction Induction Card (CIC) in addition to completing a Work Safely at Heights short course through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- 3.Consider specialising, such as becoming a flat roof specialist or metal roof plumber for commercial buildings.
