What's it like to be a Mathematician?
Mathematicians use mathematical principles to solve problems in a wide range of industries and disciplines. They usually specialise in one or more areas of mathematics such as Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or Pure Mathematics. Analytical skills, a strong aptitude for mathematics and an interest in problem solving are key to becoming a Mathematician. They work for universities and other education and training providers, government departments, and companies in the financial, professional and technical services and insurance industries.
Tasks and duties
- Analysing and interpreting data and producing statistics to describe trends and patterns.
- Formulating, developing and improving mathematical models.
- Developing algorithms and computer programs.
- Applying mathematical methods to simulate processes.
- Developing predictive models and forecasts used in financial modelling and risk management.
How to become a Mathematician
A bachelor degree majoring in mathematics is usually required to become a Mathematician. Postgraduate study may be an advantage.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree majoring in mathematics, such as the Bachelor of Science, majoring in mathematics. Prerequisites may include completion of Australian Year 12 and assumed knowledge in English, mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics.
- 2.Complete postgraduate study, such as the Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics).
- 3.Consider completing a PhD program, such as the Doctor of Philosophy – Science. Prerequisites include completion of a relevant four-year undergraduate degree with a substantial research component, or completion of a relevant master’s degree.
- 4.Seek out researcher and internship opportunities while studying. The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) website may be a useful resource.
- 5.Consider joining a professional association, such as the Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS).
