What's it like to be a Mechanical Engineer?
Mechanical Engineers use their knowledge of mechanical systems to develop and build machinery, tools, engines and other products. Mechanical Engineers work throughout all phases of product life cycle, including design, development, installation, testing and maintenance. Mechanical Engineers work across a range of industries, including aviation, transport, power generation and manufacturing. They may also choose to specialise in a sub-discipline of mechanical engineering, such as acoustics, medical devices, building services or noise control.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Analysing problems to determine project requirements.
- Designing and developing mechanical devices using computer-aided design.
- Creating and testing prototypes, and analysing the results.
- Modifying designs as needed, based on test results.
How to become a Mechanical Engineer
To become a Mechanical Engineer you are generally required to complete a degree in engineering with a major in mechanical engineering.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in the field of engineering. This will usually be a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering). Entry to these courses is generally based on Year 12 results and having met the requirements for prerequisite subjects (usually mathematics and physics).
- 2.To work independently as a Mechanical Engineer, most states require you to have a Professional Engineer’s Licence. This is usually gained after at least four years of practice as an engineer.
- 3.Mechanical Engineers may undertake a postgraduate degree in mechanical engineering in order to increase their chances of becoming a consultant, manager or project leader.
