What's it like to be a Museum Curator?
Museum Curators are responsible for overseeing museum collections by supporting the acquisition, display, preservation and development of objects for exhibition. It is common for Museum Curators to specialise in a particular discipline such as science and technology, natural history, decorative arts or cultural heritage. Museum Curators typically work in museums and art galleries but may be required to travel to inspect or acquire new collections or items.
Tasks and duties
- Researching and negotiating acquisition of items for the museum, either permanently or for a set period of time, ensuring the careful display, care and storage of items.
- Identifying, classifying, documenting and conserving items and collections.
- Maintaining organisational records and overseeing the display and education program of exhibitions.
How to become a Museum Curator
To work as a Museum Curator, you usually need a bachelor degree with a major in a relevant area, such as classics, fine arts, history, cultural studies or anthropology, as well as a relevant postgraduate qualification.
- 1.Once you have an arts or science degree, enrol in a postgraduate qualification in museum studies, curatorship or cultural heritage, such as a Graduate Certificate of Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies or a Master of Arts (Curatorial and Museum Studies).
- 2.There are many career pathways for Museum Curators, such as becoming a program manager for an arts festival, managing international exhibitions, becoming a Senior Curator or Museum Manage
