What's it like to be a Picture Framer?
A Picture Framer cuts and assembles pieces of timber called mouldings to make frames. Picture Framers frame paintings, etchings, photographs, needlework and many other kinds of art.
Tasks and duties
- Meeting with clients to discuss their needs, their wall materials and their desired outcome.
- Assembling the frames, cutting timber to size and shaping with special tools.
- Cutting out cardboard to line the back of the frame.
- Securing the artwork, photograph or needlework in place using staples, screws and adhesive to keep it in place.
- Cutting glass to fit the frame using special glass-cutting tools.
- Repairing old and broken frames.
How to become a Picture Framer
Formal qualifications are not essential to become a Picture Framer, but may assist you in developing your skills.
- 1.Consider completing a Certificate III in Picture Framing (MSF30518) through TAFE or a registered training organisation. The course will take you about 2 years to complete and may be offered as an apprenticeship or traineeship.
- 2.Find work as a picture framing assistant, and learn the skills you need to practise the profession on the job under the guidance of someone more experienced.
- 3.Join the Picture Framers Guild of Australia so you can meet likeminded people to share tips and techniques with.
