What's it like to be a Reporting Analyst?
Reporting Analysts gather and analyse data to guide an organisation’s decision making and improve performance. They identify requirements and design and implement reporting systems based on these needs. A Reporting Analyst needs to communicate clearly and be comfortable using both logic and creative thinking to solve diverse business problems. They work in many industries including banking, financial services, health care and insurance.
Tasks and duties
- Creating reports and developing tools and processes to automate reports.
- Analysing large amounts of data relating to sales, customers or financial performance.
- Using Structured Query Language (SQL) and other coding languages to extract data.
- Aligning reports to business objectives and key performance indicators.
- Collaborating with other business areas and leaders to identify reporting needs.
- Accessing existing databases and creating processes for storage of new data.
How to become a Reporting Analyst
You usually need a bachelor degree in business, IT or a similar field to work as a Reporting Analyst. Advanced data analysis skills are essential. Some employers prefer candidates with the ability to code.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in computer science, IT, data science, finance or economics. This usually takes three years. Seek internship opportunities while studying to gain workplace experience.
- 2.Build experience working in an entry-level analyst role in a relevant industry such as banking, financial or professional services, health care services or insurance.
- 3.Consider completing postgraduate study, such as a Master of Data Science or Master of Analytics. You can also advance your skills by completing additional vendor certifications.
