What's it like to be a Signmaker?
Signmakers are responsible for the physical productions of signs needed by customers to increase their branding footprint. They create and apply vinyl decals, print graphics on banners or paint on timber and other materials, depending on the finish required. Signs and decals can usually be found on buildings and cars.
Tasks and duties
- Discussing client requirements and determine the digital files needed.
- Determining the most suitable materials to use for the sign, including vinyl, timber, glass, metal, plastic or electronics.
- Preparing the sign surface by cleaning or sanding.
- Digitally sketching the design.
- Making adjustments to the design with client before finalising the sign.
- Preparing the paints, oils, varnish or enamel required.
- Applying vinyl decals by carefully positioning, peeling and laying.
- Monitoring the order workflow.
- Maintaining a safe working environment, especially when working at height.
How to become a Signmaker
Formal qualifications are not required to become a Signmaker but may provide you with valuable skills and knowledge.
- 1.Gain on-the-job experience working with a more experienced Signmaker and take on more and more complex jobs as you gain skills.
- 2.Consider completing a Certificate III in Signs and Graphics (CPC30216) through a TAFE or registered training organisation.
- 3.You may need an elevated platform ticket or a forklift licence, depending on the height you’ll work at or the tasks you’ll undertake.
