What's it like to be a Service Desk Officer?
Service Desk Officers provide IT support to computer users either in person or remotely. They assist people in the proper use of computers and work to solve problems for users as they arise. Service Desk Officers need good communication skills in addition to technical knowledge of modern computer systems. They work in the IT customer support departments of organisations in many industries. Some roles may require working in a call centre.

- Responding to IT service requests to resolve technical issues.
- Providing remote and in-person IT support to users.
- Adapting a client’s software and hardware setup to their requirements.
- Downloading, installing and updating software.
- Staying updated with changes to popular content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress and Joomla.
- Working rostered shifts in a call centre environment.
- Assisting others in the proper and efficient use of computers and software.
- Determining hardware and software requirements and implementing computer networks.
How to become a Service Desk Officer
You can work as a Service Desk Officer without a tertiary qualification provided you can demonstrate the necessary experience and capabilities. A vocational education and training (VET) or university qualification in IT may be preferred by some employers.
- 1.Complete a qualification in IT. This could be a Certificate IV in Information Technology (ICT40120), which usually takes one year. Alternatively, complete a degree in information technology, computer science or a related field, which usually takes three years and may provide broader career options.
- 2.Gain experience in an entry-level IT support role.
- 3.Consider completing further studies to progress your career, such as a Master of Information Technology. This usually takes one to two years.
