What's it like to be a Swimming Pool Technician?
Swimming Pool Technicians maintain, service and treat swimming pools in public and private venues. In some cases, they may also assist with the installation of pools and spas. Swimming Pool Technicians may work in a variety of settings such as in sporting or leisure centres, hotels or resorts, public swimming pools or for private swimming pool owners. This role usually requires individuals to work outdoors, be physically fit and strong swimmers.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting pool maintenance, which includes testing for water quality and pH levels, pool and water cleaning, and measuring and applying chemicals for correct water balance.
- Maintaining and fixing pool and spa equipment including filters, pumps, chlorinators and heaters.
- Installing pool equipment, servicing existing systems and repairing any faults, cracks or leaks.
How to become a Swimming Pool Technician
You don’t usually need formal qualifications to work as a Swimming Pool Technician, as on-the-job training is generally provided. However, a qualification in a related field may be an advantage.
- 1.Look for opportunities to gain experience with a junior or support role in a leisure centre, hotel group, townhouse complex, council pools or swimming pools in commercial or public settings. Check with your state to see if you need a licence to work in swimming pool repairs and servicing.
- 2.Consider undertaking an entry-level qualification, such as a Certificate III in Swimming Pool and Spa Service (CPP31218). If you are conducting any electrical work on swimming pool heating or lighting, it’s likely that you’ll need a licence.
