What's it like to be a Truck Mechanic?
Truck Mechanics maintain and repair trucks, buses and other heavy diesel vehicles. They diagnose and repair brakes, engines, suspension and steering, and perform tasks from routine services to complete engine rebuilds.
Tasks and duties
- Detecting truck issues.
- Issuing quotes to customers.
- Servicing trucks, including checking oil, wheel alignment and testing the battery.
- Ensuring road worthiness and undertaking preventative maintenance.
- Dismantling engines and checking parts.
- Diagnosing parts issues with the aid of a computer.
- Welding, machining and hand fitting replacement parts and doing light body repair.
- Diagnosing and repairing hydraulics systems.
How to become a Truck Mechanic
To become a Truck Mechanic you’ll need trade qualifications through an apprenticeship, and you’ll need to obtain specific licences.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Engine Technology (AUR31516) through an apprenticeship or through a registered training organisation.
- 2.You may need a forklift licence, a driver's licence and a medium rigid (MR) driver's licence. Check with your local roads and traffic authority for your state or territory’s specific requirements.
