What's it like to be a Caretaker?
Caretakers play an important role in maintaining and ensuring the upkeep of buildings, grounds, facilities and assets in settings such as schools, community centres, aged care homes, flats and hotels, keeping them secure, clean and well-maintained. Caretakers often live on site, undertaking basic handyman work and garden maintenance as well as cleaning and preparing rooms and common areas for guests and tenants.
Tasks and duties
- Maintaining the grounds, including watering, weeding and mowing lawns.
- Maintaining equipment, including minor repairs to fixtures and fittings.
- Cleaning the building common areas including mopping and sweeping the front entrance, maintaining driveways, footpaths, stairwells, corridors and letterboxes, and removing rubbish.
- Handling emergency after hours calls.
- Providing monthly reports to stakeholders.
- Coordinating contractors and tradespeople.
- Conducting property inspections.
- Undertaking compliance audits and asset inspections.
How to become a Caretaker
You don’t need a formal qualification to become a Caretaker and some skills can be learned on the job. Experience and/or qualifications in building maintenance, cleaning, handyman work, plumbing, electrics or gardening may be beneficial.
- 1.Consider completing a relevant qualification, such as a Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) or Certificate III in Cleaning Operations (CPP30321).
