What's it like to be a Handyperson?
A Handyperson carries out maintenance, repair or installation jobs around a home or business. They often work for themselves, or for small businesses and franchises. A Handyperson may specialise in provide electrical, plumbing or carpentry services, depending on their type of qualification or level of experience. Clients often include homeowners, real estate agents, nursing homes and social care residences.
Tasks and duties
- Installing curtain rails.
- Hanging picture frames.
- Putting up shelving.
- Fitting smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Replacing fuses, light bulbs and electrical plugs.
- Fitting locks and alarms.
- Hanging doors.
- Moving furniture and assembling flat-pack items.
- Painting and decorating.
- Unblocking sinks and fixing leaking taps.
- Minor repairs.
- Basic gardening.
- Clearing gutters.
How to become a Handyperson
Qualifications are not mandatory to become a Handyperson. Holding a trade qualification or professional licence may be required if you intend to carry out plumbing or electrical work.
- 1.Decide on what kind of Handyperson services you’d like to provide. It’s important to check what licences or qualifications are required if you intend to offer complex or specialised services.
- 2.Consider completing a Certificate III in Plumbing (CPC32413), Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30811) or a a Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) either through TAFE or an apprenticeship.
- 3.If you intend to operate your own business, you’ll need to have an ABN and register as a business.
