What's it like to be a Decorator?
Decorators plan the interior decorative schemes of residential and commercial buildings. They work with clients to advise on colours, furnishings, artwork and finishings.
Tasks and duties
- Meet with clients to discuss requirements.
- Present ideas for colour schemes and palettes.
- Provide advice to clients.
- Prepare samples, drawings and floor plans.
- Work with architects, tradespeople, interior designers and retail salespeople.
- Shop for soft furnishings, paint, wallpaper, homewares and antiques.
- Manage administrative tasks, such as project tracking or invoicing.
How to become a Decorator
You don’t need formal qualifications to work as a Decorator, but there are courses that may help you develop your technical skills.
- 1.Consider undertaking a Certificate IV in Interior Decoration (MSF40118) through a registered training provider. This course will prepare you to advise clients on the finishing of interior spaces.
- 2.You could also complete a Bachelor of Design at university. You’ll need to have completed year 12 (or apply for flexible entry) and it will help for you to have a portfolio to submit as part of your enrolment.
- 3.It may be helpful for you to join the Design Institute of Australia to keep up with industry news and trends
