What's it like to be a Marine Biologist?
Marine Biology is a strain of science which focusses on marine organisms in their natural habitats. As a Marine Biologist you may investigate the behaviour and physiological processes of marine species, or the diseases and environmental conditions that affect them.Tasks and duties
- Collecting samples from the ocean and testing them in a laboratory.
- Conducting species inventories.
- Testing and monitoring sea creatures that have been exposed to pollutants.
- Preserving specimens and samples of unknown species and diseases.
- Figuring out the results on computers or writing up the findings for publication.
- Assessing the causes, effects, prevention and control of introduced species.
- Developing long-term programs for monitoring environmental pollution.
- Providing guidance to help manage fisheries.
- Providing recommendations for the development of marine conservation and harvesting policies and programs, including aquaculture.
- Recommending alternative industrial practices to minimise negative effects on marine species and habitats.
How to become a Marine Biologist
To work as a Marine Biologist in Australia, a qualification in biology with a specialisation in marine biology is usually required. These are typically bachelor degrees and entry normally requires prerequisites in English, mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology.
- 1.Undertake study in the field of biology, specialising in marine biology. This may be a Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology). Alternatively, for those with undergraduate qualifications, complete a Masters degree, such as a Master of Science in Marine Science and Management.
- 2.There are numerous career opportunities for Marine Biologists, including moving into research, conservation or oceanography.
