What's it like to be a Zoologist?
Zoologist’s study the ecology, behaviour and physiology of animals and their habitats. Zoologists usually specialise in one area of Zoology such as Entomology (the study of insects), Parasitology (the study of parasites), Ecology (the study of the environment of animals), Ethology (the study of animal behaviour), Ichthyology (the study of fish), Mammalogy (the study of mammals), Ornithology (the study of birds), Herpetology (the study of reptiles) or Physiology (the study of functions of animals).
Tasks and duties
- Studying animals in their natural habitats, as well as in captivity and laboratories.
- Performing experiments to identify species and gather data on growth, nutrition, reproduction, prey and predators.
- Developing ways to control populations of wild animals and animals in captivity.
- Undertaking surveys of fauna and preparing reports for management agencies.
- Preparing or supervising the preparation of laboratory reports and scientific papers.
- Participating in wildlife awareness programs for the public.
- Examining bacteria, fungi, cells, and other microscopic organisms, for information on larger plants and animals.
- Writing articles and publishing findings.
How to become a Zoologist
There are a number of university courses you can undertake to become a Zoologist such as a Bachelor of Zoology or a Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Biosciences. Alternatively, you may complete a Bachelor degree in Science with a major in Zoology.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor degree in Zoology or a Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Biosciences or complete a Bachelor of Science with a major in Zoology. These courses are open to anyone who is 17 or over and has completed Year 12 with an appropriate Universities Admission Index.
- 2.Some graduates choose to complete postgraduate qualifications such as a Master of Science – Zoology, especially those who wish to teach in schools or universities, or undertake applied research in the animal, ecosystem and marine divisions of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
- 3.Explore opportunities for employment in a range of specialities such as working as a laboratory or research assistant, or working in museums, zoos, state and territory departments of agriculture, and organisations concerned with conservation, wildlife management, environmental control, fisheries and national parks.
