It is a good place to work if you keep your head down, never raise any issues and risk your own health and well being to keep a job, no matter the consequences.
The good thingsCity of Sydney could be a great place to work at, as it owns and operates great facilities and the level of service the public generally receives from the employees is high. City of Sydney has no shortage of money and funding and it shows in the facilities it operates, including state of the art libraries and buildings - really work class, modern and with all the automated systems one could desire. Great amenities and well funded.
The challengesThe challenge is sinking into the workplace and the work culture: many teams, many locations, different attitudes and expectations (sometimes conflicting) from me - and variable rates of success in interpreting those expectations and attitudes. Some staff was very friendly in helping me overcome challenges, but the final problem (and the reason I am no longer there) came from the management, who didn't deal well or honourably at all with a work issue which presented itself. Without going into particulars, I can say that the management lied, when they assured me that my particular challenge at work could be solved as a routine matter, with a simple medical certificate. It was not the case, they didn't keep their word and I was terminated instead, simply for bringing up an OHS issue and asking it be addressed with some adjustment. Because City of Sydney used two layers of recruitment agencies to source their personnel, it is very difficult to have any recourse in cases such as these, of injustice and ill-treatment.

The good thingsAnytime not being in the main library or doing group activities for patrons
The challengesPeople protested to keep the library open, then didn't come back. It was the quietest place to work. Two levels of management were terrible and complaints didn't reach the top management. A toxic work environment.
