What’s it like working at Queensland University of Technology?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Queensland University of Technology offers several positive aspects for employees, including a generally collaborative work environment with supportive colleagues and excellent facilities across well-located campuses. The institution provides competitive benefits including good superannuation and salary packages, while maintaining flexible working arrangements that support work-life balance.

However, employees have identified areas for improvement, including concerns about management practices and communication styles. The job security for casual and sessional staff remains a significant challenge, while the siloed nature of operations can impact cross-departmental collaboration. There are also opportunities to enhance training and onboarding processes, particularly for new and casual staff members.

My life has been ruined by working here. I've learnt I am disposable piece of trash.
The good thingsMy colleagues were so supportive.
The challengesTrainwreck and callous management. Seriously, where do I start? After coming back to a very similar job within the same management team, they dramatically cut my pay, and my management team comprised of three people. One was the line manager who never even said hello to me in TEN MONTHS, no I am not joking. I complained about that fact multiple times and it was never acknowledged. In other words, I did not exist. Next manager happened to interview me out of my job, by claiming I was not worthy of a permanent position because I happed to "fail" the interview. Next manager was really only there because middle management didn't want to deal with the common people. This manager's passive-aggressive, gaslighting 1on1 meetings really only occurred to justify their position. There was no praise, only piles of work, and then inquisition as to why I hadn't completed the enormous workload. I was interviewed out without any performance issues. Just reeks of a HR experiment.

    Petty and unproductive work culture
The good thingsNo amount of money would make this type of work environment worthwhile. The culture was unsupportive and demoralising that the role became unsustainable, regardless of the compensation.
The challengesI worked as a Scientific Officer in the Kelvin Grove H2 lab for six months, and it was an extremely challenging experience. The work environment lacked collaboration, constructive feedback, and recognition, which made it difficult to perform effectively or feel supported. Not a single person I interacted with was friendly or supportive, which made the environment extremely difficult to work in. The culture did not value academic work, and there was little respect shown for staff or their contributions. I tried to raise concerns through formal channels, but it became clear that system would prevent meaningful change. Based on my experience, I would advise prospective applicants to carefully consider whether this environment aligns with their expectations and professional values.
