What’s it like working at Royal Flying Doctor Service?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees consistently praise the frontline staff and colleagues at Royal Flying Doctor Service, describing them as dedicated, passionate, and professional people who create a strong team environment. Staff appreciate being part of an organisation with a strong mission and meaningful community impact, knowing they are helping to save lives and serve remote communities. Many employees value the flexibility in working arrangements, including work from home options, as well as good education and training opportunities and salary packaging benefits.

However, there are some potential challenges. Many employees indicate that management and leadership could be improved, with concerns about decision-making processes and communication styles. Some staff have noted concerns about workplace culture, particularly regarding accountability and the gap between executive and frontline teams. Remuneration could be more competitive, particularly for remote roles, and some staff in operational roles have experienced challenges with work-life balance due to on-call requirements and demanding rosters. The organisation is experiencing rapid growth and change with new contracts, which can create pressure on existing staff, and there are concerns about staff retention, particularly in remote locations.

Have to work here for love over money - luxury in today's world.
The good thingsLoved the workshop and viewing the planes/ helicopters in the workshop, my immediate manager (who has now left after a long period serving the RFDS) was excellent, flexible hours around caring for my children, great variation in tasks and responsibilities, great staff though undervalued, nice to be a part of an organisation that is critical to saving lives.
The challengesPay is very low, forced vaccine or loss of job, high value staff not treated with respect, management slow to make some necessary decisions, buckets of money for some expenses, nothing for others, potential to be a great workplace, finance holds the reigns extremely tightly on any expenditure.

    Leadership Fails, Safety Overlooked
The good thingsThe RANs on the ground built a strong team environment
The challengesThis organisation promotes values like integrity and honesty, but the reality is very different. Executives routinely fail to demonstrate these values, and workplace safety for RANs is frequently neglected. Overall, the culture is toxic, and there is a wide gap between what the company says it stands for and how it actually operates
