What's it like to be a Computer Technician?
Computer Technicians install and maintain computer networks and servers for organisations. They configure new systems and resolve any IT issues.
Tasks and duties
- Setting up new computer systems.
- Installing, maintaining and repairing computers and servers.
- Configuring and updating software and drivers.
- Supporting computer networks.
- Managing security and ensuring that internet security software is up-to-date.
- Troubleshooting any issues occurring with hardware and software.
- Performing diagnostic tests, resolving errors and making sure the system runs correctly.
- Answering computer-related questions from employees and customers.
- Training non-IT professionals on computers and software.
How to become a Computer Technician
Computer Technicians are typically expected to have completed an undergraduate degree in information technology, computer science or a closely related field.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in information technology, computer science or a related field.
- 2.Undertake an internship to apply your knowledge in real-world scenarios. Internships also connect you with professionals in the IT industry who may be able to support future employment opportunities after graduation. In some cases, internships can be completed as part of your degree.
- 3.Consider completing a relevant IT certification. Though not always required, certifications are preferred for roles in information technology. The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is one of the leading providers of certifications in the world and offers a wide variety of certificates confirming foundational skills and knowledge.
