What’s it like working at Victoria Police?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees value the camaraderie and supportive colleagues at Victoria Police, building strong relationships across both sworn and unsworn staff. Many find the work meaningful and varied, with opportunities to help the community and experience different challenges daily. Work/life balance is positive in some areas, particularly regional Victoria, with flexibility and work from home options in certain roles. The organisation offers generous leave entitlements and opportunities for advancement, allowing employees to move into different roles across the state.

However, there are some potential challenges. Management is an area for improvement, with inconsistency in leadership and varying levels of support. Workplace culture can be challenging in some areas, with resistance to change and departmental silos. Career progression may be limited, particularly for VPS staff, and workload and administrative requirements are substantial, with significant paperwork demands. Rostering and shift work present challenges with inconsistent patterns, and pay levels may not be as competitive as similar roles elsewhere. The organisation's approach to modernisation could be enhanced, with opportunities to adopt more contemporary workplace practices and technology.

Why would you do it to yourself?
The good thingsI loved helping people in genuine need, catching crooks & mentoring junior members.
The challengesWhere do I even start? You can love the job as much as you like, but rest assured - it hates you back. Making what may seem to you you to be a harmless ( if mildly inappropriate ) joke can and likely will end your career, if the wrong person hears it. In a world where crooks are running rampant, swinging machetes and growing ever more violent, society is screaming for old school coppers to step in and take the streets back. But that isn't what the job wants. If you've heard stories from retired family members or friends about how to catch crooks, you can leave those romantic notions at the academy gates. Regardless of what the crook did or was doing - if it goes pear shaped while you're present, it's your fault. Louts baiting you while their friends film your reaction and post whatever they like on social media and you have zero power to stop it. Jealous, spiteful coworkers. Absolutely no support from senior ranks who are only interested in themselves. I could go on for days.

Toxic work culture unless you’re in the click or one of the boys

After leaving VicPol as a VPS2, I joined another Govt Department and became a VPS4 in less than 1yr.
The good thingsWork colleagues were great - I built great relationships with both sworn and unsworn staff. Mundane and repetitive - which is great if you are wanting to retire.
The challengesUnsworn staff in the outer suburbs rarely move on and are predominantly senior in age. With this comes an unwillingness to learn new ways of working, bad habits are engrained and management don't care to make change because they are Snr Sgts who have bigger problems to worry about than admin even though admin plays a huge part in policing. ALL staff are underpaid. Other departments are at least 1 classification up. i.e. Admin Officers are VPS3's everywhere else. Not to mention a VPS4 is paid better than a cop plus less headaches, work life balance and WFH some days - there's just not enough VPS4's to go around. Very limited career progression unless you transfer to VPC but again very few positions available. Its only now I realise just how green the grass is on the other side. I just wish I had of left sooner.
