What's it like to be a Warehouse Operator?
Warehouse Operators move goods in and out of a warehouse or depot. They prepare outgoing stock for delivery, review incoming deliveries of stock and operate forklifts and order picking machines which allow them to retrieve and store stock in high places.
Tasks and duties
- Receiving and inspecting incoming and outgoing goods.
- Reviewing goods received against invoices for discrepancies.
- Unloading deliveries from vehicles, unpackaging goods and storing contents.
- Following Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) procedures.
- Operating forklifts for movement of stock including lifting, placing and removing stock in high places.
- Operating manual and electronic order–picking tools and machines.
- Labelling incoming and outgoing goods.
- Weighing, measuring and packing goods and containers.
- Assisting with stocktakes.
- Operating computers and tools to locate items.
How to become a Warehouse Operator
You can become a Warehouse Operator without formal qualifications, but a relevant qualification will provide you with necessary skills and knowledge. A current driver’s licence and forklift licence are usually required. Additional certifications for the completion of certain high–risk tasks may also be required.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations (TLI30321).
- 2.Hold a current driver’s licence.
- 3.Get your Forklift Licence. This is attained by completing a short course from a registered training organisation (RTO).
- 4.You may need to complete additional High-risk work licences. High-risk work licences can be attained through an RTO and cover tasks such as working in high places.
